Concept artwork for Final Fantasy V.
The Wind Drake (飛竜/ひりゅう/ヒリュウ, Hiryū?, lit. Flying Dragon), also known as the Wyvern or Flyvern, is a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series. They are friendly dragons often associated with Dragoons or Highwinds.
Appearances
Final Fantasy II
Wyverns are a near-extinct species of flying dragons used as steeds by the Dragoons of Deist.
Final Fantasy IV
In the Final Fantasy IV Setting Data Book, wyverns are referred to as the former steeds of Baron's Dragoon Corps which, along with their riders, were phased out of service in favor of more efficient airship technology.
Final Fantasy V
Wind drake sprite.
The wind drake is an endangered species, with only one left in each half of the split world. They are nearing extinction due to the poisoning of dragon grass, which has been the panacea of wind drakes for years. Lenna and Krile both own a wind drake.
As well as playing a key role in the game's story, wind drakes can be rode across all worlds on the world map. They can cross oceans, but not mountains, making them somewhat inferior to the airship in movement.
Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals
Linaly, Mid, and Prettz meeting Hyriuu.
Wind drakes are known as "Tycoon's sacred dragon". Linaly, Mid's ghost, and Prettz meet one in the Temple of Winds after being ordered there by Queen Lenna.
The wind drake, at first small and weak, soon grows before their eyes. It breaks out of the Temple of Winds and flies Prettz to the Black Moon to face off with Ra Devil. In the end, Hyriuu shrinks to its normal size once it reaches the Black Moon, and Rouge throws it to the other pirates with orders to take care of it.
Final Fantasy XI
Wyverns are minions summoned by the Dragoon job, and appear as both allies and enemies. Both ワイバーン, Waibān? and 飛竜, Hiryū? have been used to refer to Dragoon wyverns.
Final Fantasy Type-0
Flyverns appear as a family of dragons employed as mounts by the dragoniers of Concordia.
Final Fantasy Dimensions
The Wind Drakes are portrayed just like their counterparts in Final Fantasy II.

Etymology
A wyvern is a medieval European mythological winged creature with a dragon's head, reptilian body, two legs (sometimes none), and a barbed tail. They appear in many crests of Europe's ancient families, symbolizing strength. The word wyvern comes from wivere, which means serpent.
Unlike the wyverns of legend, the term "wyvern" for the wind drake seems to just another name for a dragon, as they have four legs and two wings.
