The Gil Turtle (ギルガメ, Girugame?, lit. Gil Turtle), also known as the Gil Snapper, Gilgame, or Gilgamesh, is a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series, first appearing in Final Fantasy V.

Final Fantasy II
The Gil Snapper appears as an enemy exclusive to the Dawn of Souls and 20th Anniversary releases, encountered in Raqia. It is of little threat, only having moderately strong physical attacks. It is weak to Ice-elemental attacks and resists Lightning-elemental and Poison-elemental attacks.
Final Fantasy IV
The Gil Snapper, also known as the Gil Turtle or Gilgamesh, appears as an enemy exclusive to the Advance and Complete Collection releases, and is encountered in the Lunar Ruins. It is the strongest of the adamantoise line of enemies, having high HP and such high Magic Defense that magic attacks, including its elemental weakness, do little damage. It mostly attacks with regular attacks, but can also use Protect. It drops X-Potions, Lunar Curtains, and the powerful Maximillian.
Final Fantasy V
The Gil Turtle, also known as the Gilgame, appears as an optional boss encountered in the Gil Cave, as well as in the Sealed Temple in the Advance and Matrix Software releases. Unlike most bosses, it is a random encounter and can be fought repeatedly. It is a dangerous enemy when first encountered due to its powerful physical attack, Turtle, which it uses twice in one turn, and its final attack, Earthquake, which can kill any party member not under float. Despite being an undead, it is immune to life revival items and abilities. It is weak to ice-elemental attacks, immune to holy-elemental attacks, and absorbs all other elements.
Final Fantasy XII
The Gil Snapper appears as a rank III elite mark encountered in the Giza Plains during the Rains. It is a powerful foe, having access to the strong physical attack Flatten along with magicks, such as Blizzara, Blizzaga, and Disablega, and Technicks such as Flash, Purify, and Meditate. It is weak to lightning-elemental attacks, absorbs ice-elemental attacks, and halves all other elements.
Final Fantasy XIV
The Gil Turtle appears as a boss during the guildhest
Hero on the Half Shell. It is a pet of Teledji Adeledji's, and the party must rescue it from bandits. Unlike most bosses, the party must not kill the turtle; instead, they must bring it down to 50% health and lure it to special herbs that, when ignited, cause it to fall asleep. Killing the Gil Turtle fails the guildhest, and is a common trap for new players not paying attention to instructions.

It can be obtained as a reward from various sources, including defeating it in battle. It can be encountered as an enemy in the Gil Snapper's Cave, the Enchanted Maze, and the 1 Year Anniversary Dungeon; it also appears during the events "Lunar New Year" and "Return to the Halloween Castle."

The Gil Snapper returns as a special unit intended to be sold for gil. It can be obtained by defeating it as an enemy in the Gil Chamber, or from various events and log-in bonuses. When encountered as an enemy, it will raise its defense for 3 turns on its first active turn.

Etymology
"Gil Turtle" (ギルガメ, Giru-game?) is a spoof of zeni-game which literally means "money turtle," usually refers to the cub of pond turtle. Gil replaces the "zeni" in the name of the animal because it is the currency in the Final Fantasy series.
