Synergy abilities are a mechanic in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. In battle, when two party members consume a required amount of ATB charges (differing per ability), they can perform a team-up synergy ability. This ability is free to use, often deals great damage, and grants a powerful temporary effect.

Party members have unique synergy abilities together, meaning different combinations of party members can unlock different effects. This adds to the consideration when choosing a party to gain different effects based on playstyle. Synergy abilities differ from synergy skills, which are smaller moves in-battle.

Using a synergy ability with Cloud and another party member for the first time will improve Cloud's relationship with them.

Though synergy abilities are new to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the concept of synergy was first introduced in Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade during "Episode INTERmission". Synergy abilities in Rebirth are a greatly expanded mechanic.

Mechanics

When a party member uses an ATB charge in battle, those charges will fill synergy gauges. The gauge will be filled by how many ATB charges were used; if an ability costs two or more ATB charges, two gauges will be filled. When both party members have filled the requisite number of synergy gauges for that ability, the ability can be used for free.

The effects granted by synergy abilities are:

• Increase limit levels for the duration of the battle (or until they are KO'd).
• Extend the time an enemy is staggered.
• Temporarily grant unlimited MP.
• Temporarily grant three ATB gauges per bar.

Synergy abilities providing the first three effects are accompanied by an attack, which often deals strong damage, but is normally secondary to the effect granted by the ability. In some cases, synergy ability attacks can be used as a means to pressure enemies. Unlike during limit break animations, the participants of a synergy ability are not immune to damage during them.

Stagger-extender synergy abilities are best used when an enemy's stagger bar is nearly full: the synergy ability will stagger the target, and the combo's final hit will add the bonus time to the stagger and give back control of the characters.

United Refocus is the only ubiquitous synergy ability shared by all party members, which temporarily extends party members' ATB bar to three gauges, meaning they will charge ATB much quicker. This ability does not include an attack. The effect is similar to the Refocus limit break from the Refocus Materia in Remake.

Each party member has one synergy ability with an accompanying party member, meaning each (permanent) member has two synergy abilities with one another. Not every synergy ability is unlocked by default. Many need to be purchased as folios.
