finalfantasy

Underhill[1] is a minor non-player character in the original Final Fantasy. He is the owner of the Caravan, where the player must purchase a bottled faerie from him to continue their journey. Underhill's appearance is most likely based on that of a desert sheik.

In the NES version, a woman in Onrac states that her father runs the caravan, making her Underhill's daughter. In later versions, however, she states that her father works for the caravan. It is likely an error in the original translation of the game.

Etymology

Underhill's name comes from the first Lord of the Rings book, Fellowship of the Ring, where it is used as Frodo's traveling name to escape from the Dark Lord Sauron.
