Materia is a type of equipment in Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis.

Magic and command materia[]

Though not referred to as such within Ever Crisis, the main materia in the game resemble and function like magic materia and command materia. Each contains a single C. ability and can have up to four random stat increases, or "sub stats". When setting up a party, each member has three slots for equipping materia.

Synthesis[]

Synthesis is unlocked once the player completes Chapter 2 of the Final Fantasy VII story. The player can collect recipe books in order to create materia, and several are provided once the aforementioned requirement is met. It is also possible to unlock synthesis early by acquiring a recipe book from a different source. However, the "starter" recipes won't be received until the requisite story chapter is completed, even though the tutorial has the player use one of them.

Every combination of materia type and sigil requires a separate recipe. Crafting a new orb materia requires not only the recipe, but also materials and a small amount of gil depending on the type being created. When the process has started, a certain amount of real-world time must pass before it is completed, though this can be shortened with bookmarks.

The quality of the synthesized materia is chosen randomly. Its rarity can be between 1 and 5★, and it can have up to four sub stats. The results are not seen until the synthesis process is completed, but the amount of time it takes is an early clue. Each type of materia has an estimated time of completion, and materia that takes significantly longer than the standard time is likely to be higher quality. Players can also use catalyst items on the materia when starting the process to increase the chances of a higher rarity orb with better sub stats.

Enhancements and upgrades[]

A crafted materia will be at level 1, with fixed rarity and sub stats. Enhancing the materia increases its level, adds sub stats if any of the four slots are empty, and increases the value of existing sub stats. This can be done by either consuming other materia, or using materia boosters. The value of sub stats will not be increased unless all four slots are filled in, so it is beneficial to get a materia that is initially created with four sub stats. Its level is capped at 5.

Once a materia reaches max level, certain types can then be upgraded using synthesis materials. This changes it into a stronger materia, which upgrades the C. ability and increases the level cap to 10. They will still be level 5 and can receive enhancements again.

Refined materia[]

Special materia is available during the event Materia Hunt. These are effectively the same as standard ones aside from having a different name. They are always 5 and cannot be leveled up or upgraded. However, their power is equivalent to a level 10 materia despite being level 1.

There are also materia that come from this event which are identical to the refined materia, but have the same name and C. ability as normal materia.

Support Materia[]

Support Materia from FFVIIEC

Rather than being independent equipment, Support Materia take the form of "support abilities". Each weapon has three fixed support materia attached. When equipped as a character's main weapon, the associated support abilities affect the character's three materia slots respectively.
