Water spell, dealing Water-elemental damage to a target.
The following is a list of elements in Final Fantasy IX. Final Fantasy IX uses the classical eight elements; instead of Poison element like in Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX has Shadow opposed to Holy and Poison only appears as a status effect.
The player has many elemental abilities in their disposal. Most eidolons are elemental, and Vivi's black magic and conversely Steiner's sword magic focus on elemental damage. The party also has many elemental weapons. Though fractional damage exists in Final Fantasy IX, the game has no dedicated Gravity element.
Mechanics
When enemies or player characters are weak to an element, they sustain 150% damage from these elements. Party members are neutral to elements unless they are given a weakness or resistance to an element due to the equipment they wear. Weaknesses from equipment can be viewed by using Scan on one's party member.
Eiko being immune to an enemy's elemental attack.
When a character or enemy is immune to an element, they sustain no damage and the text "Guard" appears when they are hit by the element; this overrides all other resistance states. If the player character wears an element-halving equipment piece alongside an equipment piece that makes them weak to this element, they will sustain ~75% damage from that element. If the player character wears an element-weakening and element-absorbing piece together, they absorb 150% of the damage as healing. This is thus one way to heal those with Zombie status. When a character (or enemy) is set to absorb an element, their magical/physical defense that would normally mitigate damage drops to 0, effectively allowing them to be healed for more than the damage they would have received with the same stats but without elemental absorption. If a player character wears multiple element-halving equipment pieces, the effect is still only applied once. The halving effect is still only applied once even if the player halves multiple elements, and an enemy's attack contains multiple elements simultaneously, e.g. the Rainbow Wind. Wearing multiple equipment pieces that confer a weakness also do not stack.
Enemies are weak to, resistant, neutral toward, immune, or absorb an element innately. Amarant can add an elemental weakness to an enemy with Curse, but there are cases where enemies will never become weak to an element even if Curse is said to have applied it: flying enemies cannot become weak to Earth, and Ozma cannot become weak to Shadow unless the friendly monsters quest has been completed.
FINAL FANTASY IX Remastered- Testing Aqua Breath with Elem-ATK and against enemy weak to Water
Fractional damage abilities can be elemental, e.g. Aqua Breath is both Water-elemental and deals percentage-based damage. Resistance against fractional damage is a separate flag from elemental resistance (see information on "Heavy").
Some pieces of equipment grant an elemental boost that raises damage done with attacks that use that element. This is called "Elem-Atk" in the help text for equipment pieces. The boost adds 50% to the damage calculation; it stacks with other boosts like Killer abilities and MP Attack and the target's weakness.
If a party member nullifies ("Guard") an elemental attack that also inflicts a status effect (Ark's Whirlwind, Tiamat's Jet Fire, Mistodons' Mist, and Wraiths' Devil's Candle), the status cannot take effect, but if that character absorbs the element, they can still be affected by the status. Nullifying Fire element also prevents Fire-elemental attacks from healing Freeze and Ice- and Water-elemental attacks from healing Heat.
Some player abilities are not elemental themselves but will use the element of the character's equipped weapon, like Steiner's Stock Break. Elemental abilities, meanwhile, override the character's equipped weapon's element, like Steiner's Darkside is always Shadow-elemental. Vivi's Mag Elem Null makes all of his spells non-elemental, but not Steiner's Swd Mag or Vivi's physical attacks with an elemental weapon. Elem-Atk gear still works to boost damage when Mag Elem Null is in effect.
As swapping gear mid-battle is not possible in Final Fantasy IX, the player may find themselves in a situation where a character's normal attacks will be ineffective against the enemy because of their weapon's element and they will have to resort to other means of dealing damage or become a supporting member of the party.
Fire
Steiner and Vivi's combined Firaga Sword.
Fire is typically opposed to Ice, ice-attuned enemies being commonly weak to it. The player can use it via Vivi's Blk Magic and Steiner's Swd Mag, as well as Dagger's Ifrit and Eiko's Phoenix. The elemental weapons are Flame Saber and Flame Staff. Some robes make the wearer weak to Fire damage. The one equipment piece that lets the player absorb Fire damage is the Rosetta Ring, and the one equipment piece that nullifies it is the Aegis Gloves, but there are many equipment pieces that halve it. Brave Suit, Cachusha, and Red Hat boost the power of the wearer's Fire attacks.
Ice
Shiva, the Ice-elemental eidolon.
Ice is an element that many fire-attuned enemies are weak to. It is also associated with the status of Freeze. The player has many spells and weapons with which to inflict Ice damage: Vivi's Black Magic and the associated Sword Arts with Steiner, Dagger's Shiva, and the weapons Ice Brand, Ice Lance, and Ice Staff. Reflect Ring makes the wearer weak to Ice. Barette, Magician Cloak, and Magus Hat boost the power of the wearer's Ice attacks.
Thunder
Beatrix's Thunder Slash.
Thunder element is opposed to Water. The player can use it with Vivi's Blk Mag, Steiner's Swd Mag and Thunder Slash (though Thunder Slash will miss due to the Thunder Slash glitch), Dagger's Ramuh and the elemental weapons Coral Sword and Lightning Staff. Certain equipment pieces also boost the equipper's Thunder damage: Extension, Flash Hat, and Thunder Gloves. The following armor pieces make the wearer weak to Thunder: Chain Plate and Reflect Ring.
Water
Waterga enemy ability.
Water-elemental attacks and spell remove Heat status. The player can do Water damage with Vivi's Water spell and Steiner's Water Sword, Quina's Aqua Breath and Dagger's Leviathan. When Amarant equips the Dragon's Claws, the one Water-elemental weapon in the game, his No Mercy will also be Water-elemental. Unusually, there is even a weapon that confers Water-protection: Vivi's Octagon Rod allows him to absorb Water damage. The player can boost the power of their Water attacks with Golden Hairpin, Golden Skullcap, Octagon Rod, and Pearl Rouge. Wearing Desert Boots makes the wearer weak to Water damage.
Wind
Twister, a Wind-elemental Blu Mag spell.
All rackets deal Wind damage with physical attacks, as do Amarant's Kaiser Knuckles. The player can use magical Wind attacks with Fenrir's Millennial Decay attack and Quina's Twister (Aero spells are enemy-exclusive). Many flying enemies are weak to Wind, but Float status does not make one weak to Wind even if some enemies deliberately give the player party Float status before using Wind attacks on them. The following equipment pieces increase the power of the wearer's Wind attacks: Black Belt, Bracer, Fairy Earrings, and Feather Hat.
Earth
Fenrir's Terrestrial Rage, an Earth-elemental summon.
Many enemies are immune to it, and no enemy is weak to it. Float status avoids ground-based effects, as do flying enemies. The player can do Earth damage via Quina's Earth Shake and Eiko's Fenrir (though equipping Maiden Prayer changes Fenrir's attack to a Wind attack instead). The following equipment pieces increase the wearer's Earth damage: Bone Wrist, Gaia Gear, Germinas Boots, and Twist Headband. There are no enemies weak to Earth damage, only enemies that either take no damage from it (flying enemies) or outright absorb it (earth-attuned enemies). Flying enemies do not become weak to Earth even if Amarant's Curse claims to have added this weakness.
Holy
Terra Homing is a Holy summon attack.
Holy is an element typically opposed to Shadow. Attacks and spells of the element tend to manifest as azure energy. Eiko is the player character associated with the element the most, having the Holy spell and the Holy-elemental summon Madeen in her arsenal. Some Holy-elemental weapons also exist (Asura's Rod, Excalibur & Excalibur II, Holy Lance) and Quina has LV4 Holy. Numerous equipment pieces also give Elem-Atk to Holy, boosting its power. The Ancient Aroma, conversely, makes the wearer weak to Holy. The only way to avoid Holy-elemental damage is to wear the Chimera Armlet, but some other equipment halve it. Undead-type enemies tend to be weak to it.
Shadow
Doomsday Sword, a Shadow-elemental attack.
The player can deal Shadow damage with Vivi's Doomsday, Steiner's Darkside, and Dagger's Ark. The following equipment pieces boost the wearer's Shadow damage: Ancient Aroma, Black Robe, Demon's Mail, Gold Choker, Light Robe, and Mage's Hat. The Maiden Prayer, conversely, makes the wearer weak to Shadow. Ozma's Shadow-resistance state depends on the friendly monsters quest completion; if Ozma becomes vulnerable to Shadow, it will hurt itself when it uses Doomsday.
Restorative
Healer ability in action.
Items and abilities that restore HP or MP are reversed on undead type enemies or those with Zombie status. The player can make their normal attacks "Restorative-elemental" with Healer. Concentrate and Chemist enhance Restorative for spells (former) and items (latter).
