Battle

Zalamander's tail attacks deal damage within an arc, so it is possible for some party members to avoid them if they are spread out. It breathes fire that hits all targets in a range. Zalamander is immune to magic.

Strategy

It is recommended to bring along Light Curtains or have the ability to cast Protect to reduce the damage it can do with its strong physical attacks, and also be able to absorb or nullify fire-elemental attacks. The Heart of Flame garment grid is particularly good for this, giving the party Fire Eater.

Despite Zalamander being immune to magic, elemental items can harm it, so Ice Gems, Fish Scales, and Electro Marbles can chip away at its HP. The player can equip the Dark Knight dressphere on all the girls to deal maximum physical damage with attacks.

If the player does not care about speed, they can easily defeat Zalamander with a party of one Songstress (preferably with First Strike), one White Mage, and one physical attacker, and use Darkness Dance and Pray while the attacker deals the damage.

Creature Creator

The Zalamander can be captured with a Trap pod L in the Thunder Plains during Chapter 5. Do note that the Zalamander will become unobtainable once Humbaba is defeated and Cid is rescued from the New Cave to get Episode Complete for the Thunder Plains; as such, capturing Zalamander at the very start of Chapter 5 is recommended, assuming it hasn't been captured already.

Initially, it starts with Attack, Flame Breath, and Tail Smash, as well as Ailment Def. In battle, it can learn Tetra Ward (receive damage from any attack of the four basic elements), Auto-Regen (cast Regen in battle), and Total Limit Break (allows HP and damage dealt to go up to 99,999).

Fiend Tale

One notable Zalamander hates fighting. But in time, seeing his Drake brothers march off to battle, Zalamander becomes strong and decides to fight to protect his family. Viewing this fiend tale unlocks the Dragon King Jr. in the Fiend Arena.

Fiend Arena

Two enemy teams feature the Zalamander: Roughneck and Dragon King Jr. Both of them appear in Grand Cup: Hard. The Zalamander in Roughneck is identical to the one found in the Fiend Haunt in Chapter 4 and Cloisters 41-43 of the Via Infinito in Chapter 5; as such, it will count towards Shinra's Bestiary. The Dragon King Jr. version is much tougher, capable of a variety of physical attacks, including Critical Attack (critical hit on one character), Drain Attack (steals HP from one character), and Heartless Strike (reduces a character to 1 HP). Due to this version having different stats and new attacks, it won't count towards Shinra's Bestiary.
