finalfantasy

Star Ocean is a sci-fi Japanese role-playing game franchise developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix, centering around groups of space explorers from a utopian future society of real-world Earth that emerged following an apocalyptic World War III.

The series was created after tri-Ace fell out with Namco over the latter's heavy-handed directorship of Tale Phantasia, which would become the first Tales installment Tales of Phantasia. The first Star Ocean game was released in 1996 for the Super Famicom, and its development was heavily influenced by American sci-fi franchise Star Trek. The franchise's first global release was the second game, The Second Story, on the PlayStation in 1999. As of 2025, the series comprises six main titles (of which three have been remastered), one gaiden game, two spinoffs, several manga, and two incomplete production works.
