Elnoyle

Elnoyle is an enemy in Final Fantasy VIII. Its appearance is similar to the boss Elvoret, except for the dull brown coloration. It is a notable enemy for the Energy Crystal item it yields, needed for making various ultimate weapons.

Stats

In the Japanese version of the game, Elnoyle's HP formula is ${\displaystyle 3.25(Lv)^2 + 965(Lv) + 30000}$.

Encountering

When Esthar City is flooded with monsters after the Lunar Cry, to the north of Odine's lab there is a black figure sitting at the farthest point, who will laugh "Heehahaheehee" when the player tries to strike a conversation. The fight commences immediately after, and the player cannot escape the battle. This can be repeated as many times as the player wishes by leaving the screen and returning.

Elnoyles are also met in random encounters on the roads in Esthar City and in the chapel of Ultimecia Castle.

Battle

Elnoyles are weak to Sudden Death. They swipe at the party with their claws and can counter physical attacks with this. Their Storm Breath, used every six turns, hits the whole party. They can dispel the party's status enhancements, debuff them with Pain, or kill them outright with Death. It also uses its Tail Needle attack on occasion. It is one of two normal enemies that are immune to Gravity, the other being Behemoth.

Elnoyle is an important enemy because it drops Energy Crystals needed to remodel Quistis's and Rinoa's ultimate weapons. Plus, they refine into Pulse Ammo needed for the Lion Heart, Squall's best weapon, and for Irvine's Shot Limit Break. Energy Crystals can also be refined into Ultima. Elnoyles are immune to Tonberry's LV Up and LV Down commands.

Strategy

Junctioning 100 Deaths to status attack has a chance of killing an Elnoyle in a single hit. It is also susceptible to the Degenerator Limit Break.

Elnoyle can be inflicted with the Darkness and Poison statuses, rendering its physical counters useless and helping the party chip away at its massive HP. These can be applied through the Pain spell which Elnoyle carries. Casting Pain can inflict these statuses, but junctioning them to ST-Atk-J can do the same without using up the player's stock. Alternatively, junctioning Pain to ST-Def-J will give immunity to Elnoyle's own use of the spell.

Triple Triad

Elnoyle is a Triple Triad card used for playing the minigame and used for turning into Energy Crystals (10:1) with Quezacotl's Card Mod.
