Desmond is a unique enemy in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII fought during the "Tanbam's Taboo" side quest in Yusnaan. The quest also rewards its monster notes.
Story
Desmond was alchemist Tanbam's late brother. Tanbam, filled with remorse, broke the alchemist rules and created an ensorcelled machine infused with the soul of his lost brother and powered by Chaos. The machine grew hostile and started to kill people, and by the time Lightning involves herself it has already killed many brave warriors. After the savior defeats Desmond, Tanbam is left without a choice and decides to bear the guilt for his crime, an action which saves his soul.

Desmond is a stronger version of Desdemona with immunities to most of the status ailments until it is staggered. It is weak to Fire and Lightning damage. If the player has become well-practiced in guarding against Rush, Desmond can be defeated easily.
Strategy
Having the Bravery status effect will also make the battle easier. Desmond uses Bravery onto itself that Lightning can steal with certain abilities. Fira and Thundara work well in this fight.
Etymology
Desmond is a given name and surname of, derived from the Irish place-name Kingdom of Desmond, an anglicization of Gaelic Deas-Mhumhna "South Munster".
