The Battle of Edge (εγλ 0009) was a conflict that occurred around two years after the Meteorfall, taking place in the city of Edge, a new settlement built near the ruins of Midgar. The battle marked the climax of the events of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and saw the confrontation between the Remnants of Sephiroth and the former members of Avalanche, alongside support from the Turks and Rufus Shinra. The battle culminated in the resurrection and final defeat of Sephiroth.
Prelude
In the wake of Meteor’s fall, survivors began rebuilding civilization in Edge. However, a mysterious illness known as Geostigma began to spread, caused by spiritual contamination from Jenova's cells. The disease is always fatal, and mistakenly believed to be contagious. Three remnants of Sephiroth — Kadaj, Yazoo, and Loz — emerged, seeking Jenova’s remains in order to resurrect their progenitor and complete his will.
Rufus Shinra, now the head of a reformed Shinra Inc., secretly held Jenova’s remains, prompting the Remnants to attack Edge and incite chaos.
Battle
The battle began when the Remnants summoned Bahamut SIN in the center of Edge. The summon attacked civilians and destroyed large portions of the city, while infected children were used as spiritual conduits. Cloud Strife attempted to confront Bahamut SIN alone, but was quickly overwhelmed.
One by one, Cloud’s former comrades from Avalanche — Tifa Lockhart, Barret Wallace, Yuffie Kisaragi, Cid Highwind, Red XIII, Cait Sith, and Vincent Valentine — arrived to support him. Together, they coordinated a counterattack against Bahamut SIN, weakening the creature through combined aerial and magical assaults. The team boosted Cloud into the air, allowing him to destroy Bahamut SIN with a powerful finishing blow.
Meanwhile, Rufus attempted to thwart Kadaj by throwing Jenova’s remains from a rooftop. Kadaj retrieved them and fled, pursued by Cloud. After a high-speed chase and battle, Kadaj, near death, merged with the remains, allowing Sephiroth to be reborn.
Cloud and Sephiroth engaged in a fierce aerial duel. Sephiroth declared his intention to plunge the world into despair once more, but Cloud, empowered by the memories of his friends and the presence of Aerith Gainsborough, defeated him with Omnislash Version 5. Sephiroth dissipated, leaving Kadaj to die shortly after.
In a final ambush, Yazoo and Loz launched a suicidal explosion that injured Cloud. However, he was saved by Aerith’s spiritual intervention. A cleansing rain fell across the city, healing those afflicted with Geostigma. With the Remnants destroyed and Sephiroth defeated, peace began to return to Edge.
Aftermath
Following the final defeat of Sephiroth, the Planet began to cleanse itself — healing the Lifestream and, in turn, purging the corruption that had manifested as Geostigma. Those infected by the disease are finally cured by healing rain.
Perhaps the most striking consequence of the conflict was the forging of an unlikely alliance between former enemies. Avalanche and the Turks, united by circumstance and necessity, found common ground in the struggle to defend civilization. As stability returned, the World Regenesis Organization (WRO) — led by Reeve Tuesti — emerged as a transitional governing body, combining volunteers from ex-Shinra ranks and former Avalanche members. This coalition would become the backbone of resistance in the Deepground War.
